When it comes to fitness, it’s easy to believe that if you can’t dedicate hours in the gym or follow a strict meal plan, you won’t see results. However, as a nutritionist, life coach and personal trainer, I can tell you that the pursuit of perfection is what often holds people back. What truly matters is consistency – even small steps make a difference.

One common misconception is that workouts need to be long or intense to be effective. But as a PT, I emphasise that even short, consistent workouts can lead to substantial health benefits. Doing a 15-minute high-intensity session at home can boost metabolism, burn calories and improve cardiovascular health, just like an hour-long gym session would.

This principle applies to nutrition as well. Many clients I work with feel that if they indulge or go off plan, they’ve ruined their progress. But as a nutritionist, I always remind them that one meal doesn’t derail an entire lifestyle. Instead of giving up, focus on making healthier choices for your next meal. Sustainable nutrition is about balance, not perfection.

Similarly, as a life coach, I see how perfectionism creates unrealistic expectations. Life is unpredictable and there will be days when you can’t make it to the gym or follow your meal plan perfectly. By focusing on small, consistent habits, you can stay on track even when things don’t go as planned. Progress is made through steady effort, not extreme measures.

Imagine incorporating just 10 minutes of exercise each day – over time, it really adds up. As a PT, I’ve seen clients achieve dramatic results with small but consistent actions. The same applies to nutrition: simple changes like adding more vegetables to your meals, drinking more water and cutting back on alcohol and takeaways a little can have a lasting impact on your health.

In my work as a life coach, I often see clients fall into the trap of comparing themselves to others, especially online. It’s important to remember that your journey is unique. The success of others shouldn’t deter you from celebrating your own progress. Your focus should be on the small, consistent actions that build real and lasting change.

Motivation is another common stumbling block. On days when you’re feeling particularly motivated, you might feel like you can take on the world and smash out an intense workout. But on other days, when motivation is low, it can feel like a struggle just to get moving. This is where discipline comes in. Even on the days when you don’t feel like exercising, doing something – anything – is better than doing nothing. A walk, a few bodyweight exercises, or a short yoga session are all valuable and keep you in the habit of moving your body.

Ultimately, as a nutritionist, life coach and PT, my advice is simple: don’t aim for perfection. Aim for consistency. Every small step, whether it’s a 10-minute workout or a healthier meal choice, gets you closer to your goals. Over time, these small actions compound, and that’s where real change happens.

So, the next time you find yourself thinking that a short workout or an imperfect meal isn’t worth it, remember that something is always better than nothing. Progress is about moving forward, one small step at a time.
